History of the Plastic Shed:
In the past, plastic film recycling was nearly impossible in Teton County due to contamination, logistical challenges, and lack of infrastructure, leading to tons of waste being sent to the landfill. In 2020, TVCR launched a pilot program in partnership with local businesses and schools, successfully diverting over 5,000 pounds of plastic waste into Trex composite decking. With overwhelming community participation, TVCR collaborated with the county to try baling stretchy plastic. The baling was successful, but storage remained an obstacle.
In 2022, Trex offered to donate a storage container, allowing TVCR to scale up operations. In 2023, the Plastic Shed opened at MD Nursery, funded by Silver Star Communications and Grow Huts, to provide a public recycling drop-off site for plastic film. RAD Curbside now collects stretchy plastic from businesses and residents throughout the valley. With support from Teton County Solid Waste, our efforts have significantly reduced plastic film waste and transformed it into reusable materials.
